CasCioppo Bros., Seattle
By Dan Larsen, for SeattleInsider.com

The sticker behind CasCioppo Brothers' deli counter says it all: "I love animals. They're delicious."

This is no place for vegetarians.

Just as any proud carnivore within the Seattle area should not live without partaking of the many pleasures of Metropolitan Grill, CasCioppo Brothers should not be overlooked. Wedged between Crown Hill and Sunset Hill in Ballard, a trip to this meat mecca offers the doube-whammy of also being located next door to one of Seattle's best bakeries, the equally superb and equally low-profile Larsen's Danish Bakery.

With pithy staff banter from Peter Glick and Gus Froyd and no-frills decor, this meat milestone, which is actually a wholesale company in back and a deli up front, manages to maintain a casual neighborhood atmosphere that sticks to Ballard's salty, working class roots while also offering a class act of culinary delights that caters to Ballard's recent yuppie influx. Glick and Froyd can not only tell you the difference between a New York and a Porter House, prepare a slab of succulent flesh with an impressive array of peppers, herbs and seasonings or whip up a mean sauerkraut, but also offer you a meal-specific, no-BS recommendation from their well-priced wine selection.

Other salivation-inducing items from their surprisingly extensive menu include flank steak, real jerky, grilled chicken, meatballs, grilled sausage, barbecued pork, a respectable selection of complimentary cheeses and frozen takes-homes such as as their hearty lasagna and meatloaf.

So whether you're looking for a lunch meal that may bite back or something to take home to the grill, CasCioppo brothers is one of the best haunts for Seattle meat-lovers.
